4 Months with the Tesla Model Y (Juniper): A 70-Car Veteran’s Review
After personally owning more than 70 cars and testing at least 50 others, I’ve developed a very high standard for what makes a "good" vehicle. After four months of daily driving the new Tesla Model Y Long Range 4WD (Juniper refresh), I can finally share my verdict.
This is my second EV (my first was a Nissan Leaf), and the leap in technology is staggering.
Range & Charging: Real-World Efficiency
While the range on the Tesla is far superior to the Leaf, I’ve found that my "real-world" usage is very comfortable. I typically keep the battery between 20% and 80% to preserve its long-term health.
Home Charging: Using a 16ah charger, it takes about 4 hours to get from 20% back up to 80%.
Supercharging: On the rare occasions I’ve used Tesla's Superchargers, I’ve been impressed. A 20% to 80% charge takes roughly 30 minutes.
Driving Dynamics: Heavy but Agile
Despite being a heavy car, the Model Y handles remarkably well. It is undeniably fast, though I find myself staying in "Chill Mode" 90% of the time. It’s still plenty quick for merging, and I believe it reduces wear on the tires and the car’s components.
The Tire Debate: I ordered my car with the 20" Helix aluminum wheels because I love the look—and even though they were a pricey upgrade, I don't regret it. For winter, I switched to 19" tires on Gemini rims. While some owners claim the 19s are much smoother, I personally didn't feel a dramatic difference in comfort or range.
Living with the Tech: Better than an iPad?
I’ll admit, I was worried about the lack of traditional buttons. However, after just a few days, the touchscreen became second nature. It’s as responsive and easy to use as my iPad.
The Cameras: I’ve had backup cameras on many cars, but I never fully trusted them. The Tesla cameras are different; the quality is so high that I find myself relying on them more every day.
Smart Features: My favorite "hidden" feature is Auto Shift (Beta). You just press the brake, and the car uses its cameras to guess if you need to go in Drive or Reverse. It’s surprisingly accurate.

The Winter Experience
Where I live, winter averages around 0°C (32°F). The ability to "pre-condition" (warm up) the car via the app is a game-changer. Turning the climate on just 1–2 minutes before I walk out the door is enough to make the cabin perfectly comfortable.
What I Love (and What I Don't)
The Best Bits:
Keyless Entry: I never touch a key. I walk up with my phone, the car unlocks; I walk away, it locks itself.
The Audio: The sound system is incredible. Spotify sounds great, and I’m looking forward to trying Tidal soon for even higher quality.
Connectivity: Instead of paying for a separate data plan, I use a phone hotspot. My phone automatically connects when I get in, and it works flawlessly.
The Gripes:
Door Handles: I still dislike the flush outdoor handles. I’d much prefer a traditional "pull" handle.
Wipers: I wish I had more manual control over the wiper speed/timer.
Footwell Heat: Sometimes my feet feel a bit cold even when the cabin is warm, though this might just be a setting I haven’t mastered yet.
The Final Verdict
Even after a lifetime of owning different cars, I can honestly say the Model Y is one of the best I’ve ever had. In terms of value for money in today’s market, I don’t think there is a better purchase available.
